What to do: Pull over safely, switch off, check level if safe. Do not drive — arrange recovery.

Also called: oil can, oil pressure, low oil pressure

Engine temperature / overheating dashboard warning light

Engine temperature / overheating

What to do: Informational only.

Also called: sidelights, parking lights

Icon artwork mostly from Wikimedia Commons dashboard tell-tales / ISO 7000. Symbols still vary slightly by manufacturer — confirm in your handbook.

How to read warning lights

Colour is the first filter: red = safety-critical or stop soon; amber/yellow = fault that needs attention; green/blue usually confirm a system is on (main beam, sidelights).

Photograph the exact symbol and any message. That helps a garage or breakdown operator more than “some light came on”.

Illuminated ABS, airbag, ESC or brake lamps can fail an MOT even if the car still drives. Do not clear codes repeatedly without fixing the cause.

People also ask

What does the oil can light mean?

Low oil pressure — stop safely and switch off. Driving on can seize the engine. Recover, then check level and our oil lookup before any DIY top-up.

What does the engine management light mean?

A stored engine or emissions fault. Steady amber: scan soon if the car feels normal. Flashing: stop when safe — catalytic converter risk.

What does the DPF / tyre / AdBlue light mean?

Frequently asked questions

What do red dashboard warning lights mean?
Red usually means stop as soon as it is safe — oil pressure, overheating, brake system or charging faults can leave you stranded or damage the car if you keep driving.
What do amber or yellow warning lights mean?
Amber (or yellow) means investigate soon. The car may still drive, but emissions, ABS, TPMS, DPF or stability systems may be compromised — and some lit lamps fail an MOT.
What does a green or blue dashboard light mean?
Green and blue lights are usually informational — for example sidelights on (green) or main beam on (blue) — not a fault.
What does the oil can warning light mean on a car?
The oil-can symbol is low oil pressure (or sometimes oil level on some cars). Pull over safely, switch off and do not keep driving — recovery and a level check come next.
What does the engine management light mean?
The engine outline / check-engine lamp means a stored engine or emissions fault. Steady amber: book a diagnostic scan soon if the car feels normal. Flashing: stop when safe — misfire can destroy the catalytic converter.
What does the tyre pressure warning light mean?
TPMS means one or more tyres are under-inflated or a sensor has failed. Check cold pressures against the door-pillar sticker, not the sidewall maximum, then inspect for punctures.
What does the ABS warning light mean?
ABS illuminated means anti-lock braking may be disabled. Normal brakes often still work, but wet stopping distances can suffer — get a scan, and note lit ABS can fail an MOT.
What does the airbag warning light mean?
An SRS / airbag lamp means airbags or pretensioners may not deploy in a crash. Drive carefully to a diagnosis appointment — do not ignore it before an MOT.
What does the battery warning light mean while driving?
A red battery / charge lamp means the alternator or charging circuit is not keeping the battery topped up. The car is running on battery alone — reduce electrical load and get somewhere safe soon.
What does the DPF warning light mean on a diesel?
The exhaust-filter / DPF light means the particulate filter is loading with soot or cannot regenerate. If power is normal, a sustained higher-speed run may finish regen; limp mode needs garage diagnostics.
What does the AdBlue warning light mean?
AdBlue / SCR means urea level is low or the system has a fault. Refill with proper AdBlue soon — many cars eventually refuse to restart if the tank runs dry.
Can I drive with a dashboard warning light on?
It depends on colour and feel. Red oil, temperature, brake or charge lights: stop safely. Steady amber with normal driving: often limp carefully to a garage. Flashing engine light or loss of power: stop and recover.
Will a warning light fail my MOT?
Yes for many safety lamps — ABS, airbag, brake and ESC lights that stay on are commonly inspected. Fix them before the test date.
Why doesn’t my car’s warning icon look exactly like the pictures online?
Manufacturers stylise ISO tell-tales. Search by shape (oil can, thermometer, car skidding, tyre) and colour, then confirm the exact meaning in your handbook.
