ABS warning light — what it means
An illuminated ABS lamp usually means anti-lock braking is disabled. Pedal brakes often still work, but wheels can lock on a hard stop — especially in the wet. Lit ABS is also a classic MOT fail.
Also called: ABS
What it means
Anti-lock braking may be disabled. Normal braking usually still works.
What to do first: Drive carefully, especially in wet weather, and get a scan. Can fail MOT if lit.
Common causes
- Failed wheel-speed sensor or damaged reluctor ring
- ABS pump/module faults
- Low system voltage after a weak battery
- Wiring corrosion at hubs
Step-by-step
- 1Drive smoothly and leave extra stopping distance.
- 2Do not ignore it before an MOT booking.
- 3Get a diagnostic scan — guessing sensors wastes money.
- 4Check for related ESC/traction lights; they often share sensors.
MOT note
ABS warning lamp on is commonly an MOT failure for the braking system electronics.
FAQs
- Can I drive with ABS light on?
- Often yes, carefully, if normal braking still feels okay — but get it fixed promptly and do not treat it as optional.
