DPF warning light — what it means
The diesel particulate filter light means soot is loading up or a regeneration cannot finish. Short urban trips are the usual UK trigger. Ignore it long enough and you get limp mode and a big garage bill.
Also called: DPF, filter, exhaust filter
What it means
DPF is loading with soot or cannot regenerate.
What to do first: If power is normal, try a steady longer run per handbook. If limp mode — garage diagnostics.
Common causes
- Repeated short journeys that never complete a regen
- Faulty temperature/pressure sensors or EGR issues
- Low oil ash capacity / overdue oil on some engines
- Blocked filter after ignored warnings
Step-by-step
- 1If the handbook allows, try a sustained higher-speed run to finish regeneration — watch temperatures and traffic laws.
- 2If limp mode, smoke or power loss appears, stop DIY driving and get diagnostics.
- 3Avoid random “DPF delete” maps — illegal for road use and an MOT fail.
- 4Ask the garage whether forced regen, clean or replacement is actually needed after scanning.
MOT note
Missing or tampered DPF systems fail MOT. Warning lights and emissions defects are tested.
FAQs
- How do I clear a DPF light?
- A completed regeneration often clears it. If it returns immediately, there is an underlying fault — scan, do not just reset.
