AdBlue warning light — what it means

Why modern diesels need AdBlue (SCR), how far you can drive when the warning appears, refill tips, and crystal/contamination faults UK owners hit.

Before you start

AdBlue is a urea solution sprayed into the exhaust so Euro 6 diesels can meet NOx limits. When the tank runs low, cars warn early — then start counting down to a no-restart lockout. That countdown is exactly what people Google at the services: “AdBlue light on how many miles left?”

What you’ll need

  • ISO 22241 AdBlue / DEF from a sealed container or pump
  • Funnel that has never held fuel or oil
  • Handbook for tank location and reset behaviour

Step-by-step guide

  1. 1

When the first warning appears, plan a refill soon — do not wait for the final countdown if you can avoid it.

  2. 2

Refill only with proper AdBlue. Never pour it into the diesel filler. Wipe spills off paint.

  3. 3

Add enough to clear the warning (often several litres); tiny top-ups may not satisfy the level sensor.

  4. 4

After filling, ignition on and wait — some cars need a short drive or a system prime before the message clears.

  5. 5

If the light stays on after a confirmed full tank, or you see crystallised deposits around the filler, book diagnostics — injectors and quality sensors fail.

  6. 6

Do not “delete” AdBlue systems for road use — illegal and an MOT fail.

What to check

  • Out-of-date or contaminated AdBlue (fuel, water, dirt) causes expensive SCR faults.
  • Some vans/cars refuse to restart once the countdown hits zero — keep a bottle in the boot if you cover high miles.

Pro tips

  • Supermarket and forecourt AdBlue is fine if sealed and in date — keep the cap clean.
  • Short-trip diesels still consume AdBlue; cold weather can increase use.
  • If buying used, ask whether the AdBlue system has been “mapped out” — walk away if it has.

FAQs

Can I drive with the AdBlue light on?

Usually yes for a limited distance shown in the message. When the system says starts remaining are low, refill before you park up somewhere awkward.

Is AdBlue the same as screenwash or fuel additive?

No. It goes in its own tank only. Wrong fluid wrecks the SCR system.

How much AdBlue does a car use?

Often roughly 1 litre per 500–1000 miles depending on engine and driving — check your handbook trip computer if fitted.

Safety first

If you put AdBlue in the diesel tank (or diesel in the AdBlue tank), do not start the engine — call recovery / a garage. Running the engine can destroy the fuel or SCR system.
