Brake warning light — what it means
A red brake lamp can mean the parking brake is on, brake fluid is low, or a hydraulic circuit fault. If the handle is fully down and the light stays on, treat it as safety-critical.
Also called: brake, !, handbrake, P
What it means
Brake fluid may be low, a circuit failed, or the parking brake is on.
What to do first: If the parking brake is fully off and the light stays on, do not drive — braking may be compromised.
Common causes
- Parking brake switch still engaged
- Low brake fluid (pad wear or a leak)
- Hydraulic circuit failure
- Sensor/switch fault
Step-by-step
- 1Confirm the parking brake is fully released.
- 2If the light stays on, check the fluid reservoir level when cold/safe — do not ignore a sudden drop.
- 3If the pedal feels long, spongy or pulls, do not drive — recover.
- 4Any leak under the car near wheels/master cylinder is a recovery job.
MOT note
Brake system defects and warning lamps are core MOT safety items.
FAQs
- Is a red brake light an MOT fail?
- If it indicates a system fault (not just handbrake applied during the check), it can fail. Fix before the test.
